Welcome Empty Nesters!
Are you feeling an inner void now that your kids have grown up?
Ever wonder what it would be like if you discovered what would truly fulfill you from deep within?
Do you feel satisfied with how you've lived your life?
Are you bringing the things that matter most to you into your life?
Do you know what your new life purpose is?
Do you ever worry about your family growing apart as your new relationship with your young adults evolves?
These are all common experiences that many empty nesters go through. The major life transition that takes place after the kids leave home may be the most impactful one you'll ever experience.
One of the hardest parts of it all is figuring out what will be fulfilling in your life in the future. This can be difficult when you've put so many years of your attention into your kids and haven't made yourself a top priority. To fully transition into a successful empty nest that feels comfortable, rewarding and fulfilling, it's important to honor this process.
As you forge your new life path, one way to do this is by learning from what's coming up for you right now, and by using what has and hasn't worked for you in the past. A successful empty nest has to do with finding the right balance among the things you enjoy, discovering what's truly meaningful to you, managing life's difficulties and preparing and planning for the life you desire. When you do these things, it provides you with structure and a direction that can help you get to where you'd like to be. Sure, it takes work, willingness, and determination – but it's possible, and completely worth it!
Another major shift during this transition involves family dynamics. This is the phase where you and your child(ren) are forging your new adult-adult relationship. Both parents and young adults thrive when they know each other is doing well and that their relationship is solid. It is crucial to have your family life functioning at a healthy level in order to feel like your empty nest is working the way it should. Learning how to create stronger, more resilient and connected relationships is an important part of creating a successful next phase of life.
You will notice that:
Roles are changing in your family; you may not be sure how you want to show up
Rules and boundaries will change in your relationship with your young adults
You may be meeting new members of the family, such as significant others, in-laws, grandchildren, etc....
How well you move through this process determines not only how your future relationship with your adult children will go, but how successful you will feel in your own life moving forward. Even if you feel this is an endless road of pain and suffering and that you will never find the same fulfillment you knew when raising your children, you can find a way through it – that is, if you open up to figuring it all out.
If you focus your energy and time in certain ways, it can help bring you to the places you want to be, both internally and externally. It takes effort to create a meaningful life, one that truly resonates with you. With new skills, support and guidance, you can shift your life from the doldrums to a place where you are excited to wake up each morning and ready to have a phenomenal day.
